Things I wish I knew from the start.

zwolfe21_ESO
Ok, I played the beta but never long enough to really explore the game.

After 30 hours, and 16 levels, here are a few items I wish I had known as part of the Daggerfall Covenant.

1) Daggerfall IS NOT the starting zone after you come back from death as a soulless husk Ayleid Kings can't understand...
2) A) You can travel Wayshrine to Wayshrine, B ) it is **FREE**...
3) Bag space is at a premium, and as spacious as a shoe box, so don't bother with cheap junk.
4) Stop happily throwing skill points where ever you please, a cohesive skill strategy is far more effective at preventing death-inducing axes to the head.
5) The Whisperer is a pain in the ***, and so are most PUGs, alcohol helps to not... care.
6) Darien Gautier is a pompous jerk, and you can't get him killed so don't bother trying.
7) Saving entire towns will show their utmost gratitude by giving you gear you won't use.
8 ) With stat bonuses, level 10s & 15s are still as useful as a wet squirrel in Cyrodiil, so run in huge packs... huge.
9 ) No, You can't see Anvil, Kvatch, or Skingrad... If you don't catch a terminal case of axing, they're not there...
10) "Worker" NPCs at resource camps fall like butter, "Soldier" NPCs seem distressed by this and attempt to lobotomize you... and usually succeed.
11) Those same "Soldier" NPCs can also easily widthstand boulders the size of a car being hurled at them, so don't waste AP on deploying siege engines.
12) Imperial Guards have a really bad temper, its not hard to see why if you make it to the bridges...

Anyone else have things they wish they'd known from the start?

Although I did not encounter 6) until cold harbor, I agree. not my favorite guy.

I learned a lot of really good stuff from the load screens, so doing delves is also very educational.

If your going to Craft, start Researching immediately.

If your going to craft, deconstruct, don't sell anything in the category your crafting in.

Create Mules, and level up their crafting skills to 3 (takes 8 to 10 level 20 items deconstructed for this to happen, then hire minions. You may get trash mats, but you also get Trait Gems and Tempers. They add up over time. You can always fire the mules or minions later.

Put all your Attribute Points into Health so you can swap out Stamina and Mana with Glyphs (until you decide to respec at a later level, then do what makes sense for your build then)

Have a Ranged Weapon in mind or right from the start, killing from afar is no reason to be ashamed, always be sneaking for your first shot.

Don't assume that because you are standing in front of a wayshrine looking at your map, that travel to the next wayshrine is free

If you can, get or make armor that has Training Traits. A full set of Green Tempered will give you 49% boost, enough to have your armor skill at 50 by character level 30 or 35 just by questing.

Go to the old starter islands, you come back at level 5 to 7, and a couple of skill points from skyshards.

Don't be afraid of Dolmens, just wait for other's to show up

If you just need to get to a wayshrine and you have no money, like when you spend your money traveling to a wayshrine that you are standing in front of. Take off your armor and weapons, and let something kill you, resurrect at the nearest wayshrine. It costs little to nothing for this.

If you are going to be a crafter, buy the ability to rip traits off gear ASAP and keep that thing full.

If you are making armor without putting set bonuses on it, you are doing it wrong. Even knowing two traits per piece (fast to learn) can give you a huge advantage. Likewise, wearing armor without set bonuses, you are doing it wrong. (Some people may wish to disagree with this. They are doing it wrong. Humor them.)

I wish I'd known you can't re-assign a single skill or even a single skill tree... you have to do ALL of them, for 100g apiece. Found that out when I went to re-assign my main character at V9 and it cost me 21k a few months ago :(

    4) Stop happily throwing skill points where ever you please, a cohesive skill strategy is far more effective at preventing death-inducing axes to the head.
I disagree. I say throw em around like crazy and experiment 1-50 because you will respec multiple times later. Having some kind of plan sure, but don't sweat it and have fun with them while you can.

8 ) With stat bonuses, level 10s & 15s are still as useful as a wet squirrel in Cyrodiil, so run in huge packs... huge.

Agree and I think it's a shame. There's such a huge desparity between vet and non vet not to mention vet1 vs vet12. The gap is too great imo and I want to see a large number of players being able to be competitive in Cyrodiil.

Can't think of too many things I could have or would done differently except maybe:
    1. Known more about researching & crafting set pieces before level 20 (don't laugh).
    2. Rolled 3 characters, one in each alliance, and different classes/races from the start.
    3. Probably would have enjoyed ESO even more if I had waited to play and hadn't pre ordered. I know that sounds horrible but don't get me wrong, I enjoy it and have had fun (or I wouldn't be playing it otherwise). It's not a big thing but I honestly think the immersion/fun factor would have been much greater if I had waited to start playing a year after release.

The only thing i wish i knew at the start is about the classes.

Would not have picked templar even for the spear skill tree.

Now is to late to regret that heh , not going to reroll all i did.

    I hate when I do that. D'oh. :)

Also re: Darien Gautier. I found him charming, but maybe that's because I'm an actual female. ;)

hmm I was under the impression that all women were individuals and opinions differed between them.

Many people can't pay the repair fee for damaged gear. If you can't break even, don't repair gear, create a new set.

With crafting the way it is, it is possible to be self sufficient. The repair cost is a major gold sink for the game, and can impede any substantial gain in gold, especially early on in the game.

Speaking of money, monsters may occasionally drop 1-4g per, and is generally hard to come by early on. If you want a mount or a bag upgrade, save up early.

Why do you need an add-on for skyshards and lorebooks? I just found a map and printed it out so I wouldn't skip any accidentally.

Edit: Maybe I should add that I get lost easily and maps are my friend.

it would have been handy to know that putting a skill on my primary bar from another weapon levels that weapon.

The add-on puts the skyshards on your in game map and also your compass at the top while you're playing, if you want. If you're gonna use the internet or help finding them all, you might as well just install the add-on. Super helpful!

Having them in the game makes them easier to see so you won't miss them. They also disappear when you get them. Many of the lorebooks have multiple locations so an external map would make those especially confusing.

    in response to #4

A build that can solo ANYTHING at later levels is not possible when starting out, you have to experiment a bit before you figure yourself and the games possibilities out...

i would suggest trying a few builds on the PTS, see how they feel to you and if you like that playstyle, then build up to it in Live.

i started a new character based on a PTS build, and already have 4 veteran characters who i really enjoy.

PTS is the Public Test Server if you don't already know that.

    In response to #2

i always laugh when i see new players using the paid teleportation version right next to the shrines.
I play every class in every situation. I love them all.
