I wonder do you still have too pay for a sub to get access to the free month of gametime?

You have never had to pay for a subscription to get your free month. You need to provide your payment information, which will often authorize a temporary charge on the card to make sure it's legitimate. That's fairly standard practice with any MMO requiring a subscription.

In the early days some people did have to pay to get the free time, that's why some methods were unavailable for a time.

You are correct that nowadays this isn't the case.

As for 'fairly standard', I've had no such 'validation' taken from any of the other 6 MMOs I play: FFXI, FFXIV, GW2, LOTRO, Rift, WOW.

It’s important to note that from now on, whenever we introduce a major change to a skill line, we will be offering a free respec to players who have invested points in that line.

No, they will take/reserve an amount to authorise your payment. But if you decide before your month is up that ESO is not for you then just cancel. You'll get your free included month but won't pay anything else

Since when have they done this? A trial nominal amount of $1 or so is the usual, payment in full up front has never been reported as far as I know.

Technically yes. But if you contact customer support they should help you out with that. There where a lot of people who don't use credit cards so the contacted CS and got the free month without need of validation.

Strange, can't seem to see where I said they take full amount up front???
I said they take an amount (and in the UK that wouldn't be $1)

Using a game time code allows the free month WITHOUT any credit card info. Did this for my friend when I purchased him the game and a time card. We never needed a credit card.

how do you post on this forum if you dont even own the game or have a sub?
Force weapon swap to have priority over EVERYTHING. Close enough.
Make stamina builds even with magicka builds.
    Disable abilities while holding block.
Give us a REASON to do dungeons more than once.
Remove PVP AoE CAP. It is ruining Cyrodiil.
Fix/Remove Forward Camps. They are ruining Cyrodiil.
Impenetrability needs to REDUCE CRIT DAMAGE. Not negate entire builds.

Paypal is another option. Which would make sense because if you don't like the game and purchase a digital copy you can claim a refund through Paypal.

    What I wanted to ask.

About authorization: if you paid with a credit card, they used to hold the full price of your chosen sub (yes, pick 6 months and see your account get charged twice, such fun!) People thought it was completely unreasonable, talked about it in length on the forum and it was changed eventually. Now they hold $1, I think, but you can still ask Customer Support to manually activate your account instead.

@Voidnova if you have game time cards those will work too, you pretty much have to rather apply payment information, or apply game time, to start the 30 days, the draw back with the card is you are pretty much committing to paying 2 months after the free 30 are up

Misleading info. PayPal doesn't refund subscriptions

Semi misleading. If you use a CC through Paypal you can request a refund from the CC company still.
