I wonder if...

A good majority of the problems with this game would've been alleviated had ZOS had smaller servers to work with.

Are the "megaservers" a bad idea? Both from a marketing and gameplay point of view?

I actually like the megaserver idea, it's just too bad it was poorly implemented.

    This.

It's a great idea on paper. But the way ZoS did it left a LOT to be desired.

    Megaserver:
    • Gives you a questionnaire so you will be on a shard with like minded people. (Gone)
    • Helps keep the zones full of other players, so there will be no ghost towns. (Nope)
    • Helps with phasing with your party members for quests. (Nope)
    • Might cause more lag in servers (Yep)
    • Will hide population from players (Yep)
    • Helps you find groups faster with the group finder tool because of the large population. (Nope)
    • Used as a reason not to have a real Auction House (Yep)
    • Will keep PvP zones full. (Nope)

    Does the megaserver work?

The only upside to this that I see is we did not have to move our characters from server to server when the population dropped.

    I want this!
Reminds me of questionnaires in Morrowind that you could take to get the most appropriate race/class for you!

Finding a crowd in certain veteran zones is hard enough now. Breaking the game down to a bunch of smaller servers would make the experience far worse, even in 1-50 zones.
Gw2 was based on 'home world' smaller servers. Trying to find people to play with in level 80 zones or do temple runs with was impossible at the best of times (due to my time zone).
Gw2 changed to mega servers about 3 months back. What a huge difference in player numbers.

As for lag. You are going to experience lag regardless of server size. Lag can from multiple sources. Too easy to blame the game for something that may not be game related.

The mega-server concept doesn't affect anything as far as I can see, other games implement the same of similar mechanisms.

Right, great idea - HOOOOOORRRIBAD execution.

The only successful game I can think of with a megaserver(which they just did recently) is GW2.

My main problem is I think they were all gung-*** about having a megaserver because there's no shuffling needed, they wouldn't have to worry about closing empty servers later, it's a potentially larger community(albeit forced).

But what actually happened is it GREATLY increased the workload for the devs and coders, it forced the *** and decent people into 1 space, it paved the way for a tremendously large margin for error as far as patch implementation and content updates goes.

They've basically put all their shortcomings on blast by attempting something on such a massive scale.

I want this game to succeed but the negativity here strongly outweighs the positivity. And I'm afraid it's going to do to this game what was done to the original incarnation of Final Fantasy 14.
