Melee class skills, why do they use magicka and do magic instead of physical damage?

It makes no sense whatsoever to me to have melee class skills use magicka and do magic damage and to have them also scale with magicka as well? Does weapon damage only effect the light/heavy attacks and not the melee class skills? Which class skills depend on weapon crit and which on magic crit? Does a melee class skill do the same damage whether you use sword&board or a big twohander?

*confused*

The tool tips really need to become more obvious about things like this tbh.

I thought the weapon skills (except staff) keyed offstamina which has dodge, interrupt, and block all ready using the pool.

    I'm must be missing something?

If you are referring to Nightblade skills, yes it's a little clunky. Skills like Impale/Killer's Blade, Veiled Strike, and etc use physical crit rating, while damage scales with magicka. Essentially any skills that seem like melee use physical crit, while any 'spells' like Strife use spell critical. It's confusing for sure. It makes stamina builds even less viable, as you will lose out on all the damage those class skills provide, while the weapon skills aren't good for that much, at least in pve. My current magicka-based melee build, using 5leather/2light still provides with around 40-50% physical crit and around 2000 magicka, but melee is tough to pull off in dungeons/trials consistently.

I've been a little confused as well. DK and NB class abilities use magic even though they are suppose to be stamina classes. Seems that it doesn't matter which class you choose, all players know magic. This is even more apparent by the soul trap leveling with the main quest. All players are mages.

There is no such thing like a "stamina class" in this game.

Thanks for clearing that up, the part about which crit rating is used for which class skills. Still confused whether or not weapon damage has any effect on those abilities though, you'd think that a class melee ability would hit a lot harder using a twohander than a dagger, but I don't feel like it does.

Is weapon damage only effecting the light and heavy attacks which scale with stamina and the only way to make class melee skills more powerful is get more magicka?

I think he just means that those classes seem to be mainly melee oriented (even though they also make excellent casters), it feels like they should be using stamina for their attacks. A false assumption I believe.

I may be wrong though and he might believe those classes should only use stamina.

I agree. The balancing is so terrible right now at veteran levels they may as well just completely remove heavy armor and medium armor from the game.

They are being way too slow with fixing these issues and players will not tolerate it. Its causing many to leave.

I believe that all caster class abilities should use magicka and scale off a combination of your maximum magicka pool, the weapon damage and use magicka crit chance, and all melee class abilities should use stamina and scale off a combination of your maximum stamina pool, weapon damage and physical crit chance.

For this to work there needs to be a separate resource bar for dodging, sprinting, blocking and such though and of course a lot of balancing. Not to mention balancing of the armor types and their passives.

You are not missing anything except perhaps that the light and heavy staff attacks scale off stamina, not magicka which would make much more sense.

This topic however is about the class skills, not the weapon skills.

Throughout elder scrolls game this has been true, Evey character has a flame spell and healing spell in the very beginning However you had the choice to continue studying it or not

Well it makes sense sorta its part balance and .......Most the class abilities just seem like Magic even though it has a physical component it seems more like magic propelling it puncturing strikes a magic spear appears and uses it physically.

The balance part is every class has innate abilities IE magic. Weapon line are all Stamina based.

Staffs use their Light - Heavy Attacks off stamina for balance reasons while the abilities are magic based.

IF Magicka users could have just equipped Staffs and slot pure Magicka and have their Light/Heavy Attacks scale with them, then Magicka users would be even more forced to use staffs than they are now.

As it stands for a Magicka user currently it doesn't matte which weapon they choose as their Light/Heavy attacks are going to suck regardless unless they have more points in Stamina to increase the value.

    I l
Already suggested this in another thread.
Give everybody 1000 energy for blocking, dodging, cc break etc.
Heavy armor and or s+b passive reduce block.cost
    Medium armor reduce sneak cost
    Light armor.reduce cc break cost.

Now you can balance magicka and stamina waaaaay more easily as both are only used for skills.
