It quickly evolved from beta into AngryArmy's personal hate-on against subscription games, and many supposed 'web journalists' who champion free-to-play's supremacy.
As the game released and it was revealed to be story-driven (which hasn't happened in a long time, except possibly SWTOR as the only exception I know), the 'grind is good' audience came out in force, angry at quests that force you to listen to dialogue and mobs that gave no loot.
There was also a brief social uprising from the 'raid or die' crowd, but Wildstar nipped it quickly. They were VERY unhappy that end-game gear wasn't so superior to everything that it would force others to buy the gear from them as they ground raid after raid after raid after raid ...
And lets not forget the group of players which is steadily shrinking, but that has had game-breaking lockout bugs and whatnot. Early adopters were heavily penalized, but I think ZOS is getting it together.
I think this is a prime example of denial, please correct me if I am wrong, but that is how I initially interpret this post. I am definitely no Angry Joe fan but I did watch his review and it was actually spot on. Many of the things you have listed are real concerns from those groups of players and should not be tossed aside just because you do not see the same way. I do not agree with the majority of them but I will not try to discredit them either unless they are blatant lies.
Yes things appear to have come in waves but where is your listing of other legitimate complaints that were just as loud as those you listed. The Pro-TESO crowd pick and choose what they want to argue for or against and that is too bad. The forums seem to be just as bad as real life politics. Two very distinct sides here. It is too bad really.
I agreed with Angry Joe about the issues with grouping. Otherwise, it was preference posted lambasted in his usual style, with way too much of his focus on how much money Zenimax was apparently FORCING him to spend. That is not just where I disagreed, but it is where he lost credibility in my opinion.
As far as the 'legitimate' complaints? I see them fixed every day. I see them addressed in at least one patch a week. A lot of the pro-TESO crowd realize that the developers ARE doing a damn fine job, and that yelling at them about how bad they suck because they aren't moving as fast as we'd like, or aren't addressing OUR pet first, isn't a way to get them on our side.
As a person who works in the service industry, I'm constantly faced with a generation of customers who not only want it now, but feel that if they yell about it and throw a fit, they can get something special.
This isn't limited to this game at all. This is a problem that spreads itself across broad stretches of western society. I just like to call it a tantrum when it's a tantrum, and move on.
Funny, my children don't behave that way. I wonder what the difference is there?
I believe it has a lot to do with the internet in general and how much anonymity we have behind the screen. We say and do whatever we want with little to no repercussions. So much of out time is spent online that it is carrying over in life.
As for our entertainment is most rampant in the gaming community. The games themselves cater to the mentality of being selfishness. It is really evident here with the expectation of reward and not getting any by the standards set by the mentality and game industry itself.
It's actually one of those back-end reasons I like ESO so much. Low loot, low rewards, low exp, low level gains ...
I end up looking for other methods of enjoyment. Story, sound, exploration, scenery, and good friends having fun times.
ESO is MY type of game. And I know there are more gamers like me.

You are right. It has not failed.
It is still pay to play a whole 2 months after release.
How long it can stay that way?
What can ZOS do to make things right? What are they willing to do?
We will have to wait and see.
Ruze is a veteran of the PC Beta, lived through the year one drought, survived the buy-to-play conversion, and has stepped foot in the hells known as Craglorn. He mained a nightlbade when nightblades weren't good, and has never worn a robe. He converted from PC during the console betas, and hasn't regretted it a moment since.
He'd rank ESO:TU (in it's current state) a 4.8 out of 5, loving the game almost entirely.
