"Play the Way YOU Want" - Getting More Unrealistic with Every Update !

I'm fairly sure that every Elder Scrolls fan nearly wet their pants the first time they heard about ESO. We'd been waiting for this for soooo long. Zenimax kept coming out with bold statements about ESO this... ESO that... It sounded like every TES fans dream, but...

Lets face it the way they sold/hyped the game prior to launch (especially all the "Play the game the way you want" rubbish) Is certainly nothing like we have now. That may have been 75% accurate from 1-50 but once you hit VR this game becomes so linear !

The other 'Big Sell' for ESO was that this is "An Elder Scrolls game you can play online"
More accurately they should have said this is a game themed on Elder Scrolls you play online. I don't recall any TES game where I was dictated to where I could go, what level I needed to be to discover somewhere?

At this point I'm waiting for the usual half-wits to jump in shouting this is an MMO not an RPG (and other such rubbish). Or the ones who think their opinions mean that others shouldn't be allowed to have one, or to express them ! ! !
In that case I refer you to my above statements-

"Play the game the way you want"
"An Elder Scrolls game you can play online"

Zenimax's words not mine ! The more updates we get the more they are making this game linear... like almost all other MMOs. This was supposed to be different, supposed to be special... not the same old tosh hidden behind a famous/well loved francise ! VR levelling is a joke, Craglorn had such great potential but now its group or 'get out'

I haven't even gotten a character to VR12 yet and already I feel burned out by this game. The magic has gone, the sparkle is missing or something, I don't know. But I do know when you waited so long for a game like this (thought about it constantly) there is something wrong when you can't even be bothered to login ! ! !

:(

EDIT - Doh... could a Mod/Dev please move this to General Discussion forum !

Totally agree, being fixated on a video game like that means something is wrong.

Don't know why you posted this, it's been thrashed to death already .. "play as you want" doesn't guarantee every half-assed build is going to be viable and anyone thinking that was clearly deluded.

Yeah reading that back does kinda make me look sad doesn't it...lol
I meant out of all the upcoming games ESO was the one I was focused on/wanted the most. Not that I was actually thinking about ESO 24/7....lol

Yeah i agree with you OP.

There is still some hope left in me they will make a great change and show to be going in a better direction, but for now nothing.

Ooh the hypocrisy is strong with this one...
On the one hand you object to people who disagree with those that have differing opinions, on the other you call those with different opinions half-wits and their opinions rubbish. Nice... Does this make you a half-wit too?

    I reckon it does...

    Nevertheless, my 2c.
One of the major problems here is that a large chunk of people blindly swallow any propaganda that the gaming companies toss them before anything is really published in terms of actual product , and take that propaganda as universal fact, set in stone, never to change. The inevitable outcome is almost always total disappointment and whine threads like this one.

Caveat emptor. Look it up. Never ever believe anything said by someone who's trying to sell you something, that's my philosophy. Business and politics, completely interchangeable these days. I'm rarely disappointed.
In the case of ESO, I'm enjoying the hell out of it. Why? Because I never listened to the hype, my expectations were nil and I entered this adventure with an open and unbiased mind.

I read a lot about the next games coming up, looking good so far, etc... I guarantee, they too will generate their share of disappointment and whine threads due to broken promises. Nobody should be surprised at this constant deja vu. Promising things they believe their target audience will pay good money for, that's the aim. Once they have cashed in, who cares? A number of people will always move on to the next best thing. In the meantime let's milk them for what they're worth.

Or... You can decide to let go of broken promises, make the best of it and enjoy the ride, hype be damned.
All companies lie in one way or another to sell their product. The bigger the company, the bigger the lies. ;-)

This is true with me as well. I stopped buying into MMO hype about a decade ago & didn't read a lick of hype on ESO until I actually played the first beta weekend. If it didn't work out, I'd still play Skyrim & all would be fine. It did work out though & I'm able to share in the joy of Elder Scrolls lore alongside my wife as we explore Tamriel (yes, ALL of Tamriel, even the lands of the Daggerfall & Dominion scum).

Some people have taken the "Play the way you want" way too far, lol.

Catches-the-Sun - Argonian Templar - Master Smith, Provisioner, Chemist & Tailor
Valaren Arobone - Dunmer Flamewalker - Master Woodworker, Provisioner, Assassin
Kazahad - Khajiiti Arcane Archer - Master Thief
    V'orkten - Redguard Swordmaster
Finnvardr the Frenzied - Werewolf Berzerker

With you all the way until you let go that AD insult. Unforgivable >:-(

Wish my wife was playing too, and yeah, all of Tamriel too, though mainly Dominion.

See you on the battlefields then ;-)

Play the way you want as long as it is their way, hard mode, and in a skirt with a stick.........lol sorry could not resist :D

Could not sum it up better. If it wasn't carrying the heavyweight "Elder Scrolls" title, it could easily be called "Harry Potters United Online", or something.

No one would have possibly expected that from an Elder Scrolls title, yet exactly here we stand right now.

yeah i was expecting alot more from this game .. so far with all the glitches and exploits the current issue of pvp.. pvp was fun when the game first came out and it was an all out war .. but now its like 2-3 guilds teaming up with other factions and just farming points .. turned into the run of the mill pvp mmo..

I feel like it's hard to break out of the fairly linear feel when there's a single starting are per faction. You can't really choose from there, you're just stuck in the same story line. I like having more quest then are actually required to level so I have options. It's kind of impossible in ESO since we're integral to the plot, not just a face in the crowd. I don't really know what could remedy this for me. Leveling different classes for the same faction becomes a bit tiresome.

If the play you want tagline is the deciding factor for people on a game you should just walk and not buy it. That will never be the case in any game at any time, in any world.

It's impossible to get every single skill so perfectly balanced that they are all on the same level. The only way would be to have X number of classes, then just the same skills on every class, just rename them.

There is also always going to be the Min/Maxers out there that require you to do X damage or have a certain build. The days of EQ at launch are over. Even that game became like that. Only a handful of classes would even allowed to be in groups.

Like the americans misinterpret the first amendment, freedom of speech doesn't mean you own the world. "Play the game the way you want". Pick between all the options that "you want" not "Play the game with everything unlocked".

You can play the way you want... they never claimed all the builds will be equal tho. And they are clearly not...

So if you play the way you want and pick a less than optimal or even a build that is not viable and gets you killed all the time then sure...

For example go play a Resto Staff user with no heals... only CC and other support skills. You can do it, but you will die a lot... Still, if you really want to, you have the option.

That`s all they said, that you will have the option to... not that you will be able to do it all in any build you pick.

I would recommend thinking of these companies as politicians and their pre-release rhetoric to be akin to campaign promises.

Taken in that light, well, the results have been rather predictable ;)

I am fairly certain that WITHIN REASON was taken to be implied by that overplayed slogan. Obviously equipping a fishing trophy as a weapon with all points spent in provisioning whilst wearing a pink robe /dancing isn't going to make you the greatest tank in the land.

Ummm the bill of rights just refers to Unalianable rights. I honestly dont see how the first amendment can be confused in such a manner. you will have to give an explanation, However that is technically against COC, so should probably just drop it
