Gold Road - New Companions? Lets Discuss

As we approach the release of the newest expansion Gold Road, I am most excited to find new companions in the new zone! Since, 2020, we've gotten 2 new companions every year, and the devs have always gave us a little insight as to who would be joining us on our adventures.

Bastian Hallix is an imperial dragonknight
Mirri Elendis is a dark elf knightblade
Ember is a khajit sorcerer
Isobel Veloise is a breton templar
Sharp is an argonian warden
Azander is a redguard arcanist

This year however, feels different. We haven't heard a peep about any new companions, what could they possibly be cooking up for us??

Personally, I am hoping for a high elf vampire - Someone like Verandis Ravenwatch & Fennorian for the WIN!

Pretty much what White said. We aren’t getting them until Q4 and it’s a strong possibility one of them will be a necromancer.

Most likely but making a Necro companion might be rough. I doubt it’ll use pets or the tethers so Blastbones, Skeletal Mage and Syphon are out. What does that leave for offense? Skulls and Graveyard? So, ZOS would have to give the companion a unique ability that isn’t in the necro tool kit. Even having Graveyard and skulls is kind of dull. Graveyard, even for npcs is pretty avoidable and skulls is slow.

One will probably be a necro but with the Necro toolkit being in pretty bad shape would anyone use it? I think ZOS should do the odd thing and make one a Scribing companion and another maybe themed like ice mage or fire mage. Leave Necro for when you overall it, if they plan on that anyway.

EDIT- I also love the idea of one being a vampire and the other being a Werewolf. That’d be cool.

As the only missing player class in the companion line up, they pretty much have to do it and they managed just fine making other class companions who deviate from the class "norm", eg. Ember the sorcerer who summons squat diddly.

Scribing isn't a bad guess for the other and it'd be my second pick but my money would be on a Knight of the Lamp.

Yes we already have 2 other knight companions but there isn't a lot of variety in the martial department unless they pave the way for a player swordsinger class next year with a swordsinger companion now. Or someone who isn't yet but is seeking to revive the tradition and working towards that.

But that seems too complicated. I reckon it'll be a Lamp Knight.

I bet they'll repeat Companion Classes with the 8th Companion. By the time we have our 11th Companion in two years time, we'll probably see repeated Companion Races, too — although ZOS has stated that they don't feel the need to cover every Race before repeating any. We may even get another Argonian but without a slavery background, as mentioned in the Companions Q&A.

Yes, Ember didn’t summon anything but Sorc had some more damage choices spread through its other class trees. Also, I did mention that pets and tethers very likely wouldn’t be a part of the companion skills but that doesn’t leave much to put into a Necro Companion’s damage skill line. You take out pets and tethers and you got just Skulls spammable and Boneyard for damage. Tanking and healing even without pets has plenty of options.

I agree that they will do it most likely but I don’t see a necro Companion being something players are going to care to unlock, not until the Necromancer class has better options damage wise for ZOS to turn into companion skills.

We will have to see what ZOS comes up with this year for companions. Q4 DLC so we got time to speculate.

I actually think this is how the Companion Necromancer's skills will look, as it takes away the need for corpses or summons:
    • Damage Dealer
      • Some unique Ultimate associated with the Companion's Class (Necromancer) and personality. Maybe the old bone dragon Ultimate that players were going to have instead of Frozen Colossus.
      • Flame Skull (single target damage)
      • Boneyard (ground AoE damage over time)
      • Death Scythe (cone damage)
    • Tank
      • Bone Armor (Companion 20% damage mitigation)
      • Bone Totem (area defense buff)
      • Grave Grasp (area crowd control)
    • Healer
      • Render Flesh (single target heal)
      • Expunge (negative effect purge)
      • Life amid Death (ground AoE heal)

In other words, Death Scythe is moved from the player Necromancer tanking line to the Companion Necromancer damage dealer line. It's like how Isobel Veloise (a Companion Templar) has the Companion version of Sun Shield in a separate skill line than the Companion version of Puncturing Strikes, despite player Templars having the player version of those skills in the same skill line.

I like the tanking and healing skill lines but the damage one doesn’t excite me. However, yeah that’s pretty much the path you’d have to go down… unless you take some abilities from Soul Magic World skill line since those are technically Necro abilities.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they skip necromancer companion. They have made a class that is basically unplayable. It’s clunky, convoluted, most of the skills a necro uses are outside its class toolkit, and it’s the only class where you can’t use some skills in public.

Summoning the dead in town is bad but summoning daedra is a-okay!

A quirky necro companion that is actually a fun time and not all broody would be awesome though.

A Necro companion would be fun, but I imagine it would also be a headache inducing nightmare to have a companion using skills in a town that gets the player a bounty.

Bounty meter appears because a companion used a Necro skill to aggressively target and eliminate a chicken you fired a shot at in passing is going to be a meme all over the various boards/discords.

    I'm more interested their perks.

I'd really like an Eveli clone with a perk that mimics Eveli's uncanny ability to beat you to any locatioin by a healthy margin. So perhaps a perk that grants you the ability to fast travel to any location that's been discovered/completed on the map and not just wayshrines/dungeons. Limit it to once per game day, so basically every 6 hours.

There's no reason why Companion skills need to be labeled as "Criminal Acts" at all. It wouldn't make sense that the player gets a bounty for something the Companion does. If anything at all, Companion "Criminal Act" skills will likely just be given some proc condition like "Used when the Companion is not in a town" or something similar, to simulate the knowledge that "illegal" spells shouldn't be cast near witnesses.

Likewise! The companions introduced with Necrom are my favorites so far! I’m intrigued to find out if one of the reasons we’re waiting until Q4 has to do with the storyline such that introducing them too early would be spoilery? What possibilities could that open up? An Ayleid companion somehow?

    An Ayleid companion?
Player : Where are you going?
Torvesard : I still have a task to do. I need to find my Prince. Help her. Restore her to the power that is hers by right. And there are other scions out there. I remember them, too, now. Mortal. Fate's chosen. I expect our paths will cross again.

Perhaps one of the other scions is an Ayleid and following the GR story separates from Ithelia, willingly or not.

I suspect the new companion's starter quests will however be located within the bounds of Gold Road, it would be awesome if they were base game though!
