The link is in the banner at the top. They told us why weeks ago that this was going to happen. They are replacing major components in the server infrastructure.

I'm all for one that says that ZoS doesn't communicate well. However, this is not one of those cases. This one was well communicated.

There is a forums discussion linked directly below the maintenance announcement.. I imagine it's something in there.

It was suppose to be just 3 hours?

I'm sorta surprised it's *only* a 14 hour downtime. I was bracing for a full 24 hours with this one.

    Still am, I guess.

I don't know for sure, but I'm pretty sure it was 10h initially, just got extended longer.

When replacing massive amounts of hardware I would expect even longer.

I don't remember a 14-hr downtime communication for today. I might have missed the memo, however.

they first had to spray some skooma all over Tamriel, so that the cute little woodelves would fall into a deep, deep sleep.

And also Orcs, despite their robust look, have a warm and soft heart, so even they need some protection when being moved into a new lair.

When all is over, they will slowly wake up, rub their still tiny tired eyes, and start their duties as usual.
Orcs hitting hard on Highelves, woodelves at the crafting stations supporting the others with fine goods like chromium platings and rosin.

So in the end, the whole upgrade is just a small, beautiful fairytale :)

Where did you get 3 hours from? The banner that has been pinned to the top of the page since at least late last week said it was expected to last from 4 AM EDT through 2 AM EDT, which was 10 hours, not 3 hours.

And it's kind of tricky to estimate ahead of time how long these types of upgrades are expected to take, since you can't really know for sure until you actually start doing it and can see how long it's taking to upgrade 1 server, and can then multiply that by the number of servers to get a rough estimate.

And even then, each server is an individual case, since it might take shorter or longer to upgrade any given server based on the age and condition of all of its components. So once they've actually upgraded a certain percentage of them and can see whether it's taking longer or shorter than originally estimated, they can revise their estimate accordingly if needed.

Personally, I'd rather let them take their time and be careful about it, to minimize any potential mishaps.

If they do it in the time frame posted people whine they fixed nothing or just broke something. If it takes longer people whine because they should be able to do it quicker. I'm pretty sure none of them get up on the morning of maintenance and think "hmmm lets take a lot longer to really make them mad today"!

That people don't know what's going on just shows how much ZOS still needs to improve when it comes to communication and making players feel valued. In another game I play I literally get an ingame email that tells me about this stuff and you can check news about the game, like upcoming events, without even having to leave it. Oh and downtime gets compensated every time, even if it's scheduled downtime.
All we get here is a warning that the server is going down in 15minutes and for everything else you have to be on the forums regularly or watch streams or follow their twitter or something. Definitely a lot of room for improvement.

The banner saying 10 hour downtime has been up for over a week. There was a thread explaining what they were doing.

I think his post was pretty explicit about what he wanted in additional communication... most players don't ever visit these forums, some in-game notification would be nice

Personally I feel it's much better for them to extend the maintenance window and do extensive testing than rushing the process and us the players having to deal with issues after the fact.
