Staves - Weapon Crit or Spell Crit?

Can't find it in the patch notes, and it's still a little esoteric in game...

For Restoration Staves and Destruction Staves: Do their basic/power attacks utilize weapon critical chance? Or spell critical chance. Also.... Weapon Critical? Or Spell Critical.

Thanks :)

    Spell.

In 1.6 they changed it so anything that uses magicka - spell crit, and anything that uses stamina - weapon crit.

Synergy abilities now scale off your highest stats that are either stamina or magicka based.
Ultimates and Synergy abilities now always scale of your highest Critical Strike stat instead of just your Spell Critical Strike.
Abilities that cost magicka will now always scale off your magicka, spell damage, and spell critical strike stats.
Abilities that cost stamina will now always scale off your stamina, weapon damage, and weapon critical strike stats.

    Found here.

Just ctrl f "spell crit" and click the next button a few times and you will find it :)

    Thanks for the response! :)

I'll go ahead and ask this question then: What use is Stamina at all then for a Stave/Stave wielder? I'm a concept guy, and wanted to roll a Redguard for the roleplay. However, if Stamina is completely and totally useless on someone now who uses Destro/Resto Staves? I might need to rethink that concept.

    Thanks again! :)

Stamina won't help your DPS, but it will help you survive. Break Free, Dodge Roll and Block all need stamina. This applies everywhere, but it's more important in PvP. There are also a few very nice abilities in the non-class trees you might use (I often slot Retreating Manuevers on my magicka sorc).

So, stamina has a use. However, if you are a min-maxer, there's a fair chance you will eventually regret rolling a race that lacks a +max magicka bonus.

Stamina is also useful if you decide to use any fighters guild abilities. Probably undaunted also, although I'm not as sure of that since my undaunted skill is only level 3.

Like the other comments said stam is still absolutely necessary for every aspect of this game. I run PVE content on my DK caster and picked up werewolf purely for the 15% stam regen. This is applicable AAT's and the werewolf gives me zero negative effect aside from when I'm in werewolf mode (just that once for the quest). Worth taking a look into. Post 1.6 blocking, dodging, all these things take way more of my stam pool. Caltrops takes an unprecedented 70%. Otherwise as a caster don't worry about weapon dmg/crit at all.

All the advice is greatly appreciated.

So, if I went Redguard Templar/Healer... use the racial passives to bolster my stamina pool, and then invest my attribute points into Magicka and Health. Wear Light Armor... and... i'll be set? Good shape? Etc etc etc? :)

    Thanks again!

I wouldn't go so far as to choose a race based on stacking stam if you're trying to be a predominantly magicka user. Redguard Templar seems weak to me unless it's a tank. As a healer that race just has little to no synergy.

All of the Templar healers I know are imperial. Imperials translate well to tanks as well. Breton would also not be a bad choice for healer/magicka dps. You want your racials to reflect your end-game/long term goals.

Just make sure to have an adequate amount of stam for dodging/blocking even if you go magicka. I picked up werewolf purely for stam regen. However I would never in a million years change my dunmer DK to a Redguard to achieve the same thing. It just would be counterproductive to my game play.

Edit: As a caster I picked up Vamp instead.

    Dunmer negates susceptibility to fire
    Health regen = who cares

Lol, double edit: pretty sure my dunmer Fire resist passive is broken - took way too much dmg.

The patch notes only refer to the scaling based on the what skills cost either magicka or stamina. Ah but here's the conundrum, Staffs light and heavy attacks cost neither magicka nor stamina, so where is the clarification as to what light and heavy attacks for staffs scale off of?

I see a lot of hand waving arguments for this all referring to this particular section of the patch notes but there is nowhere in there it refers to light and heavy attacks. Sooooo does someone have proof (ie. actual patch note reference) or actually tested it themselves if light and heavy attacks scale the same way as skills? @ZOS_GinaBruno

Fire resist is broken atm. seems to increase incoming fire damage, not reduce it.

This was one of the questions in the original post as well, and I apologize if I didn't make that clear enough. I thought that perhaps the other answers got to the heart of that question, but I guess not.

I would really like to know as well. :)
