Class themes - What is the idea?

Hello everyone!

The lightbulb finally clicked and turned on in my head about the classes currently in ESO.

Yes yes - we all know all classes can do all roles.

DK's can be mages;
Sorcs can Tank;
Nightblades can be healers;
Templars can be damage dealers.

This is understood that based on a combination of Weapon choices, General skill selection (Class, world, guild etc.) and armor choices you have a lot of free range.

I like the Elder Scrolls game...but since the start of the game (beta that I joined) I have had the class regret syndrome.

Pick a class and go "Oh my god best class EVA!!" and then around level 25 - 30 you start to get bored of the class almost (in pve quest grinding).

I realized that all classes are, are theme's for the game.

Dragonknights - Fire and Stone theme
Sorcerers - Lighting (dare I say semi-water theme? lightning splash and controlling)
Templars - Light and Holy theme
Nightblades - Shadow and blood theme

The problem I have is I like elements of each class "theme".

I like the idea of movement with Nightblades.
I like the idea of a Paladin with the Templar
I like the Spellsword of the Sorc and buddy pets
I like the damage of the Dragonknight with Unstable flame (I prefer dot damage)

So I have tons of problems choosing a class.

I always have been the "Spellslinger" or to be more specific "Spellsword" class.

1 Hand sword + Magic spell in other hand or DW + enhancing spells making me fast!

I am not sure what to do in terms of choosing a class.

Sorcs I feel are low damage DW...no synergy or gap closer...fast with bolt great...but no dots really (other than curse....I think)

DK's I feel are to "brutish" for me...GREAT damage but just a hulk walking through people...but I LOVE the Dot synergy with my DW builds.

Nightblades I love Ambush and Killers Blade execute but again its all burst...no real sustain that I have seen (Veil is awesome and Sap is GREAT)...but again I find its mostly burst...no dot damage..and funnel doesn't suit my playstyle :(

Templars I like the holy Paladin template - I really do - suits me most and would be my class but I don't like spears (and its hard not to ignore spears as it is in everything - Biting Jab OP, Toppling Charge is a clear, Spear Shards for some reason I feel is fine) - I am not really a Spear man...swords for me :)

So long story short.

Can you guys help me understand the game better please for classes? Why are Sorcs "Doomed"? in 1.6? (keep in mind I am a noob)

What are classes like endgame?

Spellsword is like what?

What are DK's like endgame in 1.6?

Please - I love this freaking game....HELP ME

The game becomes completely different from the solo experience once you start doing group content, especially trials designed for groups of 12 players.

    Mobility doesn't matter that much.
    Stealth is useless.
Pets are more of a hindrance than an asset.
Crowd control abilities are ignored by all the bosses and some of the adds.

What matters is how much Damage Per Second (DPS) you can bring to your group in single target or AOE fights, how strong your heals are and how often you can cast them, and how much pain you can take as a tank.

Sorcerers have good mobility, crowd control and pets, while they lack DPS and the ability to tank/heal as effectively as other classes.

So what I am being told then....pets are useless...mobility is pointless (to a point) and the crowd control is mostly boss immune....

So...in pve (that I want to focus on) - Sorc's are useless??????

Haven't tested it myself, but rumor has it that pets are a lot stronger in the upcoming Update 6.

My main character was meant to be an Imperial Centurion/Legatus. For me the most obvious choice was Templar. Templar definitely has the whole Stendarr vibe going for it, which by the way is the patron Aedra of the Imperial army. If you were to compare the Empire in Cyrodiil with the Roman Empire, you would also notice the similarity of style by wielding Spears + Sword and Shield. This is my general theme, so for me it was a no brainer. I've branched out a lot from there, and I attempt to master every skill available, but my main style is that of a tough Imperial soldier.

I think for the 'Spellsword' Sorcerer or Nightblade is probably your best pick overall, particularly if you just don't like the style of DK. DK does have some great options though between the reflect, dragon leap, flaming weapons, armor and passives.

The nice thing about Sorcerer is that it has a lot of ranged attack options(Endless Fury/Lighting gaoe/Curse/2 Hold CC's), and Surge which will boost your weapon attacks. The nice thing about Nightblade is some of those up close and dirty attacks you get, ambush for a closer, sap essence, siphon life, hasten (which turns into something else but supposedly its pretty cool with the ghost bow), etc.

I really just recommend you think about what most fits the style you want to play, and where you want to play it. If you're mass pvp-ing/pve as a sorcerer for instance, Negate is highly desired from you as a player. If you're a nightblade they're going to want you to drop your fear a lot, and your Soul Tether.

Don't forget you have access to other skill lines if you want to round out your style for general pve. I really enjoy using the comet that returns ultimate on strike (though its a bad idea to use this one willy nilly in pvp, as it can get reflected on your team... which doesn't make it very ultimate I know).

What Ive learned is that you either conform to the norms dictated by the flavor of the month and elitist crowd.

Or you do whatever you want, find a cool guild and have fun. For PvP that's probably a little harder but for PvE there seems to be a lot more flexibility.
Dream it, wish it, do it... or something...

Play however you want. If you want to play as a sorc, play as a sorc.

you also have to remember that update 1.6 is completely changing the game, and 1.6 comes out in less than a month, so all these FOTM builds will be obsolete in due time.

It seems like a sorc would be a good choice for you. You say they lack a gap closer or speed? But, really if you concentrate on magicka and have a big pool there, lower the cost of your spells, have great regen, then their teleport is the way to go for movement. The thing is.... this is more of a pvp tactic then something you do in pve. You wouldn't be doing that.

It seems like you want a sort of hybrid class. With surge you can help create that better, and then you can use some their defensive abilities to help you up close (for pve). You could stack magicka for pve purposes (pvp) and use their spells to do damage. Help your group out by providing CC for adds in dungeons, keep your resources good with dark conversion. There are a lot of different things you can do, to attempt a sort of hybrid build with a sorc.

Keep in mind that 1.6 does change things quite a bit with some of the spells/abilities listed above. But, then again things could improve again for sorc's in the future - if you see something that is lacking with the sorc it could likely change again (as mmo's change).

Also, remember that your identity of your class is not just "the class choice" but with other skills you pick from other lines and with your armor choice (among other choices, race, potions etc.). I wouldn't get to caught up in the "theme" of each class too much. Certainly, if you hate the overall Templar skills then stay way. But, I wouldn't get too caught up in the identity of a class just based on a few skills. Look at all the skills that your interested in for each class, combine them with other class lines, and then look at the "identity of your character" that you've created.

I think sometimes its necessary to ignore a few spells which you may prefer to not use such as biting jabs, binding javelin etc., for a class and then look at the other skills which appeal to you. You might not like 100% of all the skills available for each class. The points is really that you find a few that you love and then you combine them with other skills lines in the game. That is how you create your identity.

I hope that makes some sort of sense. The sorc seems like a fun class that you would enjoy. I still think you might like a templar with sunfire as spell you would use (if you want a sort of fire nuke dot spell). Then might combine that skill with other skills in another skill line (perhaps DW or a 2-handed line). You could combine entropy from the mage line to add another dot as well.

Good luck, and I hope I made some sense of how things can work out for you.
