Do trait bonuses have a set rate or does it come from the item you research?

For example, if I research an item that has a 5% bonus, will my crafted items have that same bonus or is there already a set bonus in place?

Set by the level of the improvement. All whites will always have X trait bonus, regardless of level of armor, and when you improve it to blue, the trait bonus improves as well. But the armor/weapon you learn it from has no effect on your trait bonus...it's hard coded.
