Why does research not give xp?

This is annoying, and I've been wondering and wondering why researching traits doesn't give anything towards progression in a craft?!

To me, the idea of researching represents your character taking the item apart, getting deep down into it, and learning something from it (the trait). Not only does it represent that, we lose the item (as we should), and have to wait anywhere from 6 hours (without the skill that decreases them), to 3 days maybe more as I'm not sure if the more traits in a given piece you research if additional traits take longer, or if certain traits just had some time frames applied.

I think the XP should be based on that research time...the longer the more you get as I would think that extra time means there is more involved 'work' being done to research the trait.

Please reconsider having researching give XP.

It does but its based on if you had created the item yourself so its not that much. I know it does because I was on the cusp of woodworking 10 and after a trait finished it levelled me.

But its not like its hard to get XP. In many ways its too easy.

that's deconstruction, which i'm fine with...i'm talking about researching traits, taking apart the items you find in the world to learn the traits they have like : 5% to armor, less crit damage, etc. so when you craft, you add the correct gem and get a trait.

woodworking is the easiest tree of all to level probably because every class has something there to use....i'm leveling it fast also, and deconstructing those items gives way more xp than the other trees, and that's by design.

Researching does give skill xp, while out questing I randomly went up to clothing 17 (and no, I had NOT just read a book), just as the message saying that some trait or other I was researching was finished. I believe what Lupinemw was trying to say was that the exp you get from it is like the exp you get from deconstructing your own items: very minimal.

ok...maybe, haven't noticed as I've had that message come up saying research completed, but didn't notice anything in terms of XP...maybe because it didn't bring up the bar? it should be more if they are giving XP.. Lupin made it sound like i made the item, then researched the trait...but i already made the item with the trait, i wouldn't be able to research it..

Researching traits gives XP. Not a big amount but noticeable. Now when all my gear-related crafts are above lvl40 I stopped deconstructing anything, but I still gain some XP by researching. Slowly, but the crafting xp bars keep moving.

P.S. I was even recording the values. At lvl12 or so of my crafts I would get roughly 1k XP per researched trait for blacksmith and 3k for woodworker. It is a rough estimate and it varied depending on the duration of research. Values for woodworking were always higher than for clothing which was higher than for blacksmith. I would also get more XP for the same research duration in the same profession but at different levels of the profession. So for the same 12 hour research at lvl13 my woodworking would get more XP than for 12 hour research at lvl12. So... there was such a mess in this system that I stopped recording the values.

    THANKS!

I'll try to keep a better tab on it. I've been researching everything i can early level to have as much as I can as I progress...finished a helm trait today that took 3 days!

Things like that, that take days upon days should give a little more than normal, to represent that extra difficulty : D

Sometimes I log on to the game after work and get a message:

    CLOTHING SKILL INCREASED TO 31.

And I scream at my computer:

    THANK YOU CRAFTING GODS!
