Researching Traits

I notice there are several level of traits on different item.

My question is do we have to research from lvl 1 and go up level by level or can we actually use higher level item and go straight to higher level trait ?

How do we know which level an item gives a trait research ?

Thanks for your time...

Choose the most important traits to you wisely.

If by level of traits you mean the strength of the effect (ie 4% vs 6% armour penetration with sharpened), the strength of crafted traits scales with the quality of the armour. So it may be 4% on white gear, but 6% on green gear or 10% on purple gear. (Not actual numbers, just pulled randomly to illustrate the point).

From what I've been seeing with traits on items, is that the traits stay exactly the same from being on a level 1 item, all the way up to a level 50 item. So for example, you get a level 1 White Quality Dagger with the weapon trait DEFENDING, which Increases Total Armor and Spell Resistance by 2%; later you will come across a level 50 Purple Quality Dagger with the exact same trait, and the exact same percentage. The description and effect of the traits do not change with level or quality of the item.

Traits come an all different levels and qualities of looted items, so you never know when or what type you will get from a drop. However, you can trade or buy a crafted item from another player, where they applied the trait you are wanting to research.

I have an Alt Character that holds all of my pending research items. I also made a simple Excel Sheet to track which traited items I have on that ALT, so I can determine on my main, if I need to transfer new items that I picked up, or if I can just deconstruct/sell duplicate traits that are already learned or waiting to be learned. It's help alot with my inventory management.

Traits have no 'levels'. There are 8 traits, you can research them in any order - but every next trait takes longer to research, as illustrated in the table you linked, so you need to prioritize. Once you've learned a trait, you can apply to any relevant item you craft, its level doesn't matter. If you know Sharpened on daggers, you can craft level 1 or level 40 Sharpened daggers (provided that you unlocked materials needed for lvl 40 weapons), no need to research it again.

That sounds buggy. Please, check again. There is NO possibility to re-discover a trait, anyhow. So if you were right, we would have to WAIT until we found a level 50 items before making any research !?

From my observation of traits, a Trait researched at level 1 is just as potent when researched at level 50.

The Tier of the traited item and whether it is a one-handed or two-handed item determines how potent the trait is.

    e.g.
    One-Handed Sword with Attack Speed
white: +2% bonus to attack speed
    green: +3%
    blue: +4%
    purple: +5%
    orange/gold: +6%

    Two-Handed Sword with Attack Speed
white: +4% bonus to attack speed
    green: +6%
    blue: +8%
    purple: +10%
    orange/gold: +12%

And the level of the weapon does not matter for the researched trait percentage.

    Research times double each time.

    1 - 6 hrs
    2 - 12 hrs
    3 - 24 hrs (1day)
    4 - 48 hrs (2 days)
    5 - 96 hrs (4 days)
    6 - 192 hrs (8 days)
    7 - 384 hrs (16 days)
    8 - 768 hrs (32 days)

Now spending into the research passive will reduce that time by around 30% at 3 pts.

My general recommendation is do training and infused first, those are the two most useful for people leveling, then Sharpened/Precise/Weighted, then the rest.

You want to raise everything 1-2 first for the sake of efficiency, then start on the longer term ones. Also to create the sets you will need 3 traits for the lower ones and the full 8 for the higher ones.

    It's actually a 20% reduction at 3 points.

5-10-20 (5+5+10)? That makes sense...I couldn't remember off the top of my head I knew that researching a new trait on my toon was 4hrs or less, but couldn't remember exactly.

    Hi OP,

Now that the game is back up, attaching a few images for reference as of 4/18/2014. The tier of the weapon is what matters for the researched trait.

Level 4 Gold with 6% attack speed

Level 50 White, but only 2% attack speed (same stone)
