New patch - templar or DK for new player?

Swithern
Swithern
Just got game and started a Templar s & b.

Doing ok, but was wondering if as a very casual player and solo for now, would a DK be a better choice for PvE content?

I know new patch changed a few things and searches are all before the patch changes, so is there much difference since the patch?

I'm asking as I don't want to invest too much into the templar if a DK would suit my time and playstyle better?

Is the DK more 'physical' in attacks for example or magic based attacks like the templar?

Um....So the question is purely speculative in nature. So I will give you my experience. I started with the DK, but stopped short at around lvl 20. It didn't suit me for solo PVE content. They are great for groups and PVP, just not for me in the solo stuff. Now my Temp is VR11 and I think this suits me better. You have some great self heals that will keep you upright, and buffs. The new update will make the DPS of Dawn's Wrath better, but you could do fine without it. Also, Temps are getting some of their skills morphed to allow for a Stamina build.

DK's are going to give you good skills as well. I guess in the end, you need to decide what you want to do at end game. But for what it is worth, Temp for me.

EDIT: Also, scroll around for Temp threads and DK threads. There you will get some more attention for your questions.

When this immediate evil power has been defeated, we shall not yet have won the long battle with the elemental barbarities. Another evil, it may be an invisible adversary, will attempt, again, and yet again, to destroy our frail civilization. Is it true, I wonder, that the only way to escape a war is to be in it?

Both can be magicka or stamina based just fine for casual solo PVE. Just pick which style you like better by watching game play videos and class breakdowns. You can't go wrong. Just depends which feels more fun to you. DK has more CC and they have fire. Templar has healing and more ranged DPS.

I won't get too into the philosophical doohickies and know-whats and what-have-you's of finding what play style fits you best via character type, but I will break it down into semi simple question and answer forms for you.

    1) Do you prefer purging the land with Fire and Brimstone, Calling upon the Earth for strength, and Pyromage Antics, or do you prefer the Golden Rays of the Sun, Divine Healing Magic, and calling upon the Gods on high to bless you with their might?

    2) Do you prefer being freakishly up close and personal to your enemies as you plow them like a drunk virgin on prom night or do you prefer a more not-as-close but still personal approach to killing your enemy?

    3) Speaking of killing your enemies, do you prefer large rocks covered in lava or a divine lance?

    4) And all jokes aside, this is where it gets serious. Pyromage, or Solar Mage?

    5) Reaver and Flame Warrior or Cleric and Paladin?

    6) Brutish knight or Crusader?

    7) Or would you prefer a robe and/or dress with a stick and fire spells versus a robe and/or dress and a stick with holy spells.

Really, that's how deep this rabbit hole goes, because frankly I prefer Templar over DK with a 2H because it feels like a Crusader/Paladin without being overzealous or even fond of religion. It's literally just a guy using High-Caliber Restoration Magic and Light/Sun Based Magic to kick some serious ass, and I love it.

A Dragonknight on the other hand is a guy using body shaping magic as well as Earth and Fire based Destruction and Alteration magic to fight as if he was a dragon.

Both are amazing in melee, and make great tanks, but DK's go a little further for Magicka and AoE builds, which Templars go a little further for Melee and Healing builds (on 1.6 that is), so really, it's all what flavor you want your character in my friend, enjoy.
Bobbity Boop, this game might become poop, but I'll still play because I'm just a pile of goop!

I couldn't tell whether to give you an awesome or an insightful. That was the simplest break down for a new player in response to this question that I have seen. I will mark this for future generations. ;)

Thanks for the replies, even if I feel a bit silly now ;)

So no classes/types are pure melee I'm reading all use filthy magic spells?

Sounds like DK is a bit more physical than templar though so might try and see how it compares.

My templar is all Sword & Board, so I might have wasted some early skill points boosting that instead of 2H which might suit me better.

Think I'll stick with my s & b templar, wasn't keen on DK when I tried it tonight.

    Thanks for advice all :)

Hey, I seriously suggest, at a later date, giving the DK a good run. Lvl 20 at least, before you write them off. I still have mine, although never play. And with 1.6, skills will go to Stam as well, which may completely change the dynamic of the game play.

But for the record, I am sticking with my Temp. Just saying that the game has a lot of options, don't write one off after just a night.

EDIT: And no, no class is purely anything. They all can fill any role, just some are better at it than others.

He's right. In Patch 1.6, also known as Update 6, class skills for all classes will have an option for them to morph and use/scale off of Weapon Power, Weapon Crit, and Stamina.

For a Templar, the most notable of these skills are also their best for their type; Biting Jabs (summoning the spear of stabby stab face) and Power Of The Light (Thine golden sun power. The Inca would be proud), one hitting like a truck despite being a melee channeled ability, providing both excellent AoE and Single Target damage, as well as providing you with roughly 10% crit for 8 Seconds. Power Of The Light just lights your target up and the more you beat it up, the more the explosion at the end of the move hits for.

Then you have that lame ass Piercing Javelin that nobody uses because there are better things out there that either hit harder, do more stuff, or both.

For Dragonknights you get a wanton crapload of neat fire ***, but it's all like centralized fire based stuff, i.e it emanates from you to hit nearby things, like your own personal Floating Fireball Turret, or a glowy thingy that makes you look like the single coolest villain from Superman's Rogue Gallery.

But yea, the reason I gave you themes over actual skills is that in a way DKs and Temps are very, very similar in terms of play styles in 1.6, it's just the "flavoring"if you will changes from each one.

In the end, it's partially of how you want to play, but how you want to feel and looks also plays a very dominant part.
