I've been contemplating purchasing a console to take advantage of the promotion that would allow me to have a copy of my characters made for the console for only $20. Then I remember how UI add-ons like Garkin's No, Thank You help keep me saner and I question whether I'll be happy with the console UI.

And yes, I find the visible friend number super annoying. I wonder if this is just a bug and not something they intended, why would anyone want this visible at all times?

Wait this isn't a bug? Zenimax actually thought it was a good idea to have your online friends burning itself into your screen? Ugh...something else I guess I have to get an addon to fix...thanks Zenimax before long my addon folder will be bigger than the game folder.

Really annoying! If I want to know how many friends are online, I can open the social menu. It's not like a number is even useful. Under what circumstances does ZOS think I would want to know how many friends are online without wanting to open the menu to find out which ones?

What minimalist UI? The pc one is very bulky and unintuitive. Also lacks tons and tons of features and options that should be available. You say you don't want to get an addon for fixing this one? How about the million other things we need addons for that are standard normally?

Any single flaw doesn't need to be game breaking in order to be fixed, or at least recognized it adds to the burden that the accumulation of many flaws makes overall.

    With vanilla game -

    1. Being notified with no option to disable that unnamed ppl in unnamed guild has completed some trial is not game breaking. But is annoying.
    2. Being teased with the ability to cycle your quest journal forward, but oddly not backwards, is not game breaking. But is annoying.
    3. Having your horse stop running randomly when not encountering any obstacle is not game breaking. But is annoying.
    4. Having all morphs shown as generic morph skill 1 regardless what level you have when respec'ing is not game breaking. But is annoying.

I won't bother listing more - there are dozens of these, and I'm sure some people could list even more.

If the only bar to a flaw being recognized as valid by you was game breaking or not, then you'd have a completely broken game buried under a mass of individually none-game breaking bugs/flaws.

Having the rest of the chat window gracefully fade away, but this bizarre friends list number stay perma lit is not game breaking, no. But it is one more obvious and constant reminder that an instantly correctable flaw is being ignored.

A mod author corrected this literally couple days after 1.6 launch with an addon. So don't tell us it would be a huge burden for a professionally paid and competent programmer at ZOS to fix even quicker than that. They simple choose to ignore it, like the rest of my list and everyone else's list of non-game breaking flaws.

Having your horse dismount you as soon as it encounters water more than 2 feet deep.
Your horse (or other mount available through the Crown Store) being unable to walk up some sets of stairs.
Having your horse dismount you before you are able to go through a gate, but be able to jump over the wall to the next area if available (e.g. Haven).

All not game breaking, but highly annoying. ;)

Yah, that was my point. This and many others need to be fixed I shouldnt have to download a bunch of addons just to fix something that you think would be commonsense.

The only UI in the game that could arguably be called "minimalist" is the combat UI.

Most everything else is a cluttered, clunky and badly designed mess that doesn't even work as intended.

Between my skirmishes with the UI, I'm still enjoying the game, but I can't avoid having strong opinions on this issue. I teach UI design, and my opinion comes from an honest and reasonably objective assessment. In no way should it be interpreted as slander of ZOS employees either individually or in group, nor of ZOS as a company. I just play the game and comment on what I see, and large sections of the UI are just badly done, for whatever reason it may be. Not beyond repair, not bad at the core, but lacking in planning and execution, as if rushed, and buggy, as if insufficiently tested. It's lacking in so many ways: features, function, clarity, consistency, convenience. There are so many fundamental UI design blunders in there.

Most of the problems can be fixed with add-ons, but the game should not be dependent on the hard work of a bunch of volunteers to make it reasonably convenient to play. Also, some things are broken or malfunctioning on the server side (LFG not working, guild banks glitching and lagging), and that can't be fixed by add-ons.

Yet another stupid addition just like being notified every single time someone in your Trade Guilds complete any content that NOBODY WANTS but ZoS refuses to fix, change, add an "off switch" in settings.

Until they get around to sorting this out themselves, Garkin's 'No, Thank You' has been updated to remove this.
I'm also tired of people saying "there's an addon that fixes that" as defense of ZoS's inability or unwillingness to listen to it's paying customers. They added that crap THEY can just as easily remove it.

I 100% agree with the OP, for a time I even didn't want to add any Friends because of that, now it seems that Garkin's No Thank You fixes it but we shouldn't have to add so many add-ons for simple things like that :/

I find it fundamentally disturbing that ZoS has ranted on and on about the importance of player choice since their pre-launch hype train, then that perspective mysteriously disappears when they decide to thrust a poorly designed UI on you.

Anyone else feel like you're being cheated on?

I dont understand why ZOS would change this, everyone complains about the notifications popping up on screen and now they added friends to, so if a friends online you always see a little number on screen. This has to go. Don't throw it into the "get an addon" area to get rid of it. If I want to see who's online, pressing "o" isn't that difficult. This ruins immersion and its kind of obvious its there for consoles owners...but I'm not a fan.

There is an addon that helps with stuff like that, it is called "No, thank you!"

While I'm fine with the idea of this being a setting, count me in the number who actually prefer this change, and would be unhappy if they took it away completely.

If they do make it a setting, I'd also love to see a third option which would be to show all three indicators (mail, friends online, and notifications) in the vertical orientation all the time when the chat window isn't visible. (Currently, the vertical orientation only shows up in a few specific cases…)
