Keep crafting level 1 daggers?

So I'm leveling my smithing by spending 2 iron ingots to make level 1 daggers and im level 9 and its becoming REALLY slow.

Is it better to be making gear at level 1 to save resources or does making to low level gear slow exp by too much?

IIRC the best inspiration/mats ratio was with lv6 daggers after launch. But it's definitely not the way to go up to 40 :D Higher items give much more inspiration.

    Best IP/craft-decon:
    1. Read a book (5 in game per Tree)
    2. Intricate (drops only)
    3. Decon of highest level drops bought/farmed/given (VR13-14)
    4. Decon of Level 6/16/26/36/46/VR1/VR4/VR7/VR9 (from OTHER players)
    5. Decon of above levels from your own alt
    6. Crafting Writ quest turn in, once per 20 hours per profession
    7. Crafting above levels
    8. Inspiration from finishing Research or learning a new Motif
    9. Decon of any you crafted yourself, on the same character
    10. Decon of 0 value items random drops in chests/nightstands/etc

Craft with the highest level material you can, steel gives more inspiration than Iron, Orichalc gives more still, etc.

But yes, mathematically the best returns are base level knifes, by which I mean don't add any extra mats to increase the level, don't use tempers to improve the quality, and don't bother with traits.

Also remember you get more crafting xp from deconstruction, and if you create an alt (alternate charcter) you can have one crafting and the other deconstructing (then swap around and repeat).

@Barik: To be clear, it will take forever to advance BS, CL & WD crafting skills by crafting.
Deconstruction yields way more IP than crafting does. Best to find a buddy to swap Daggers with for deconstruction. You each get a small amount of IP for crafting, then a lot for deconstructing each others Daggers.
If you have lots of gold, you can also buy crafted items from stores, to deconstruct for good IP. Higher levels and better quality give more IP.

Yep, making things is not the way to gain inspiration. Decon and Research is.

Don't overlook the Inspiration that comes from Research. While it is technically slower than deconning a pile of stuff, it is Inspiration you get just from having time march on while you are not playing. When you get to multiple day research, it is 20K or more Inspiration per item and you are learning a trait you need to learn anyway.

Also, peruse the Guild Stores and grab any gear that is higher than L50 and selling for less than 100 Gold. You would be surprised at how much you can find that meets that criteria. Decon that high level gear for some great Inspiration gains. You need about 30/40 base white VR+ items to go from 1 to 12 in a Craft Line. VR Ranked gear can give you 4000 to 8000 Inspiration (maybe more) per item deconned.

LOL, no one mentioned crafting writs. They were really created to level crafting. All advice given in thread is golden.

You get less IP from the quest turn in (while leveling the profession) than you do deconstructing a single VR9 white item that an alt you have crafted, which is less IP than if another player crafted the same item. The Crafting Writs were put in place to HELP level crafting but they are by no means a great way, just a supplement. I will however add it to my list above as it is indeed another method.

I had thought about mentioning them, but the amount of mats you need do not make up for the amount of inspiration you gain. I don't think it is too bad at lower levels of Writs, but at higher levels it's not efficient.

I noticed that these were listed separately, and with "other players" being listed higher than "from own alt."

I was under the impression that there was no difference between the IP gained from items crafted by another account, and an alt on the same account. Is this not true? If not, how much is the difference?

They are the same, if there is any difference it's negligible.

It's only a little difference, like 10% or something but it matters. having a crafting buddy is more efficient than doing it yourself via alts.

The fasted method I've found for craft leveling is to get a decon buddy, just be aware that if you overlevel your craft and put skill points into those higher tier materials in areas above your level it can make retrieving your crafting writ surveys problematic. Keep research going at all times and when it is possible put skill points into reduced research times so you can eventually research three things as once for great boosts of XP.

You may also want to break down every loot item you're getting while 1-50 and anytime it is well below your level. This helps bridge the gap nicely between decon buddy sessions. I would save buying stuff from guild store or players to decon until you're right at the end as the cost can stack up quite quickly, and with crafting writs you might be able to finish out your levels by doing those as suppliments to the other system.
