Dunmer Great House Surname Question

ToastyTheTyrant
Hey there,

I have a new character with a unique backstory I was wondering if I could get some assistance with her name. Basically she is a runaway Ashlander who joined up with a travelling Hlaalu nobleman. This mer who became her husband has the last name Hlaalu as he belongs to the Hlaalu House through both blood and rank.

Now, my question is as follows. When my character adopts the Hlaalu name would it come before her name or after her name? I know that in the original Morrowind game there were many people with Hlaalu in-front of their names when they were simply a House member and Hlaalu as their last name if they belonged to the blood lineage, but I am very curious as to the circumstances when it happens though marriage with someone who has blood lineage.

Thank you in advance!

Thank you kindly! I've read that same page top-to-bottom a few times and it certainly does clear a lot up. Basically, Hlaalu in the front part of name signifies the person as being a member of the House, like a title. Having Hlaalu after the first name(s) signifies that the person belongs to the original family of the House as well.

My character will have been married to a high ranking Hlaalu member who also had the Hlaalu family name (I say had because he was unfortunately picked apart by opportunistic cliffracers while he was travelling alone), and so I was curious to know if this would allow her to use the Hlaalu family name as well after marrying him. After reading that post I feel like my assumption is correct but please feel free to tell me if I'm wrong, Lore Kings. ❤

Ignoring how odd it'd be for an Ashlander to turn to the Great Houses ? :)

Yes she'd keep it, It'd be the last name.

All House Dunmer belong to a Dunmer Great House, so all Dunmer have a Great House surname. Not all Dunmer serve a Great House though.

You could keep the Ashlander name and just say you're a member of House Hlaalu as the husband doesn't have to be from the Hlaalu family but his family was a member under the banner of the Great House.

Great info! Just checked that my main dunmer (Martini Daniels) is lore friendly! :) because both "Dani-" and "-els" exist as suffix and prefix parts of the dunmer surnames!
