I believe this is a legitimate concern.
The thread that was closed proposed a reasonable question. Master Merchant conveniently displays information that is available in the game, making it easier (MUCH easier) for guilds to discriminate against players based on sales performance. @omfgitsbatman is simply asking for MM to receive the same treatment as an add-on (Group Damage) that did the exact same thing, but in a different environment (groups), and with different data (damage/healing).
He seems to believe that such easy access to sales information (which is quite tedious, in many cases even unrealistic to gather without the add-on, much like group DPS) turns trade guilds into elitist jerks, and has appropriately voiced his concern here on the forums, as he has seen that tactic used to success in a previous thread. So why was his closed, and not the other?
Consistency is important, in my opinion. So what gives?

What also struck me was the reasoning of "Allows people to spy on others without their permission" but as you said this applies to many addons, Master Merchant being one and LootDrop being another as it shows what other people loot, how is that not "spying"?
It's a glaring inconsistency I'd like to see addressed.

Recently, there was a post in the Add-ons category of the forums: here
This post led to an Addon effectively being removed from the game. This post is filled with name calling, inflammatory, unconstructive hate. They snipped some of the comments, but there are still quite a few remaining that are quite inflammatory. This post reached 25 pages of hate so far and is not closed yet.
This thread however: here
got closed after just 1 page with one or 2 comments that are against forum rules. None of the comments by the OP use any foul language, or anything inflammatory. There is a constructive argument going on for the most part, but there are those few that post hate. The usual method for moderation in this has been to Snip the thread of the malicious content, not to close the thread completely.
