Preface:
I don't mean for this to be another post "complaining about drop rates", but my purpose of posting this is to let ZOS see from at least my perspective & hopefully offer some criticism which may be constructive for changing the way these work.
@ZOS, I & many others have been attempting to obtain varying "hard to get" drop loot with little success. My questions are as follows:
1) Why are these sets so impossibly hard to obtain?
2) Is there anything that can be done to make them more obtainable? (on our side or yours?)
The sets are as follows:
Worm Cult / Worm's Raiment Set
Ebon / Ebon Armory Set
Savior / Hircine's Veneer Set
Arms of the Ancestors
Relics of the Physician Ansur Set
Relics of the Rebellion Set
The above listed sets drop from dungeons v5-v12, I have been playing since beta & ran the necessary dungeons 1000's of times, yet I have only completed the Savior set, & have 2 out of 3 pieces for the 3 piece sets. Been desperately trying to obtain the Worm Cult forever as well as finalizing many of the 3 piece sets & yet they still evade me =*( advice?
There have been times throughout the course of the game, where this was "semi-easier" to obtain due to the lack of difficulty doing the dungeon & therefore many of them could be repeated quickly ie. less than 3 mins. This is however not currently the case any longer & so I feel "if you missed out on getting these items when you could you're just screwed". There has also been an issue with players receiving multiple of the items they already have such as 3 worm cult robes when all they need is a sash or boots to complete the set; is this changeable???
Shroud of the Lich Set
This drops from dolmen generals & very specific ones too! It's gotten so bad that people have been creating their own fairy tailed stories as to how to get a general to drop. Realistically none of those methods actually work, but after days of farming & grinding out the same necessary dolmen's it's disappointing not getting one piece. I've had to pay an upwards of 170k for 1 piece just because my farming results were unsuccessful to say the least.
It's been rumored, I think even ZOS agreed, that this works similar to fishing. Meaning that the more people you have doing the dolmen, the more likely a general will spawn; which will in turn have a higher percentage chance to drop this much sought after loot. The problem comes when I have been running these dolmens for days with groups of 4 people or less because either nobody wants to run them due to horrible percentage of chance that a general will spawn. So if you're like me & end up soloing the dolmen by yourself over & over day in & day out; your chances are even lower. =(
Burning Spellweave Set / Sunderflame Set / Embershield Set
What I hate about this, is that there is no way to distinguish what you are going to get!?! I have been wanting the light armor forever, but after running a few hundred times I have only received a few medium pieces! This is annoying to say the least; will I ever be able to obtain this set???
The main thing to take away from this is that players don't care how difficult something is to complete! If it was unbelievably hard to beat, that's fine, "AS LONG AS THERE IS A LARGE CHANCE TO OBTAIN THE WANTED REWARD" we will work hard at beating any boss/content thrown our way; this is what makes it fun in my opinion.
Too often has this not been the case, regardless if it has been easy or difficult to beat the content, the drop rates have been the same; ie.. way too low for anyone to repeatedly spend time grinding them out to MAYBE get something. And, if you were unlucky enough to spend time grinding the v5/v10 gear towards the early release of the game, only for there to be v12 that is obtainable now, I feel your pain.
Dungeon scaling was & has been a much needed improvement, thank you for this. However, it can't be looked at as "oh people have this gear therefore everything must be working as intended"; please have your developers display actual percentages in a report proving the numbers are correct after each patch. (We would love to see this, but I meant more as a report going to management to show things are working. I just want to make sure people are looking at this so there is more of a guarantee that it's less likely to be broken.)
I'm not even going to go into RNG (random number generator) drops for pvp vendor bags due to the fact that AP (alliance points) & exp (experience points) in Cyrodiil are fairly perfectly where they should be now; good job!
Small things that have nothing to do with this that I wanted to point out while I'm ranting:
1) End gamers want to decimate things. It's a small fact. We've worked hard to get to level 50 & even harder to reach v14. When we go to a beginner level zone & it takes more than one hit to kill a low level mob we can't help but bang our heads against the wall because the amount of work we've put in should equal certain results. Yes, you can put stamina on your mount to keep you from being knocked off your mount, however, a low level non-vet ranked mob should NOT have enough power to knock you off your mount anyways! This is a small annoyance that has been true since beta; can you please fix this?
2) Some armor sets not being scaled to level. What is the purpose behind some armor only going to v10 level & not higher (such as the lich set). I understand the developers might argue "that set is OP (over powered)" but in the vast scale of things, that's difficult to prove. Can you give us any more details?
3) Armor set nerfs not being listed in patch notes. I can't recall at this point in time the exact sets/issues. But this is me asking, please, do not leave out much sought after information on purpose, & please double, triple check patch notes. If needed you can do a file diff aka comparison with unix/linux, notepad++ or many other apps/commands to ensure human error is unlikely. I think where I was going with this was "taking armor out of the game". Maybe this hasn't happened & the drop rates are just so low that players feel the armor doesn't exist any longer?
A large part of this rant is due to the fact that the number of players playing has been in a constant state of flux. In the first few months/year of release a large number of players have come & gone back & forth. And so, sets that may have been seen everywhere during a period of time & thought to be easily obtainable, were actually quite rare; who knew? The numbers have definitely seemed to dwindle regarding the massive amounts of players completing Aetherian Archive & Hel Ra Citadel, & so set items which were previously on every guild store are now so difficult to find you're spending 50-100k gold just to get each piece because you're a theory crafter & like to test things out.
Thank you for reading & hopefully some much needed changes will come from this.
