Maintenance for the week of September 8:
• PC/Mac: No maintenance – September 8
• PC/Mac: EU megaserver for maintenance – September 9, 22:00 UTC (6:00PM EDT) - September 10, 16:00 UTC (12:00PM EDT) https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/682784

This guy is actually correct in this case. Geolocation in these cases is based on the country/location that is supplied by the company registering a block of IP addresses, parts of these addresses can definitely be deployed in a completely different region (for example one of our ISPs here in Stockholm, Sweden is a UK based company so a geolocation of that IP which I am using here, will give you London, UK).

A better way of determining location is to check several addresses at the end of the traceroute, as if the second to last location is in EU it is with 99% certainty that you won't have a one-hop route straight to a server in the US.. that just doesn't happen unless you happen to own your own cable across the ocean which I guess it's safe to say that ZOS doesn't.

9 193.159.165.121 193.159.165.121 <- Deutsche Telekom AG, Germany
10 217.239.44.50 217.239.44.50 <- Deutsche Telekom AG, Germany
11 193.159.226.18 193.159.226.18 Deutsche Telekom AG, Germany
12 195.122.154.3 <- Level 3 Communications Ltd, UK (likely another case of a provider owning subnets used in a variety of countries)
13 159.100.232.160 159.100.232.160 <- ZOS Server (using their subnet which is registered to a US location, but actually it is very obviously in Germany)

This is a great tool to use if you wish to make accurate geolocations as well:

http://www.monitis.com/traceroute/index.jsp?url=159.100.232.160&testId=612630

Here you can quite clearly see that it is in Europe, just the latency (133ms in US vs. 26ms in EU) gives that away. Also the IP in question is reported as UK here which is simply because different Geolocation services have varying degrees of accuracy..

If anyone needs a reason to trust me on this, I work as a System/Network Admin with several sites all across the world and thus know quite a few things about international routing.

I hope Zenimax considers this rumor officially slaughtered, and grant me an in-game achievement and title. Jokes aside, it's an easy mistake to make.. but no, the EU server has not been moved. Whether that is good or bad, I have no opinion on.

Enjoy your evenings and hope you all sleep better knowing they didn't lie to us (about this). :D

This would explain why PvE has been less laggy lately. (Back to what it was like before the migration)

Edit! Not necessarily against this (I guess some will be), but I hope that we get same provider as game launch because ping is horrible compared to launch :/

I had less lag on US than on EU so I wouldn't mind a move. However,

I believe that they only root our log in through a server in the USA. When was the trace made? While logging in or while playing?

I'm okay with that as long as they stay away from Warsaw, Indiana.

Same, connecting in both cases from Munich. And although I play now on the EU server, I still logon to the NA server at least once a day to collect my hireling deliveries and update my research queue....it's odd but I could swear that even my character on horseback moves faster on the NA server ;)

On the EU server everyone seems to be teleporting around...no one moving smoothly. It's a mess, alas.

    Netstat while playing.

I had less lag too but not on this server.

I don't think it is back i the US. I notice lag spikes and slower reactions, but it is still much better than before, when there were overseas.

The ping is too high, though... over 100. :(

No, they did not move it. It is still in Frankfurt. You need to find a better geolocation service.

Before, doing the same thing gave me a german IP. In any case, at the time I took that screenshot, my client was connecting to that address which is in the US which you would have known if you had done any search what so ever, before assuming it's wrong.

Lagg is not a good value and has not always 100% to do with the server location... ping is a better value. I played many online games and if the servers were located on us my ping was never better than 90-100 ms, never. First months of eso, when server was located for sure in the us, my ping was 120-150 ms. Actually in this moment my ping is 60-70 so i repeat, it is impossible to get this ping in the us for me.

my guess would be it's a client server network traffic issue. Putting us all on one uber server does not stop the paths coming across the pond and bottlenecking.

it would suggest that the architecture of the game is not built for being massively multiplayer online,

The original netcode was built for massive amounts of players. Sadly, that code used a very naive trust model with no countermeasures against cheating hackers, so they added some client-server verification to the protocol back around 1.2.3 or thereabouts. The performance immediately slumped and has never recovered.

It might be helpful if those reporting high pings and lag were to give their ISP and location, and also clarify whether they're talking about PvP and/or PvE.
