In the Road Ahead chat transcript, Paul Sage had this to say about the nameplate controversy:

Nameplates/guild tags as optional UI elements? Nameplates have been in our UI backlog for a while. It is not we don’t like them. It is just that when we turn it on, it doesn’t look great. We will add them sometime in the future along with the option to not display them.

There is a simple solution to figuring out how to make nameplates look great. Open up the API and let the Addon developers create their own nameplate designs. This is turn will allow players to pick and choose the design that looks the best to them. Players who do not want nameplates to display can simply not use the addon and nothing will change for them. Win/win situation for everyone.

Nameplates really don't need to be in the game at all because when you put you cursor on a player it shows their name. Also, nameplates take away from the view and LOS as well as how well the game looks. (Yes I know there would be options to turn them on/off)

When people are allowed to put their names on their heads it promotes players doing silly and stupid names which causes other social issues.

This particular topic, though can implement it, would better be left out of the game.

That is strictly your opinion which I am fairly certain is in the minority. Lack of nameplates has consistently been one of the biggest criticisms of the game. Their existence in other MMOs hasn't taken away from the view, LOS or how well the game looks in those MMOs.

BTW the current lack of nameplates in this game has not prevented players from selecting silly and stupid names. You run across them every day.

Good point. It seems like this and a few other things some users want and others don't (like seeing armor dyes) could be programmed to be controlled in the user display settings.

But then people would have to dig deeper for things to argue about.

I can't stand looking at nameplates, but as long as its a toggle, then why should
I care if those who want nameplates get them.

They definitely need to open the API and let modders take care of it because they're clearly not delivering on it. It's pretty bad that this game is on update 3 almost and they still don't have a way to really discern between players and guilds.

The crowd crying about immersion have no legs to stand on when there's a built in health bar that floats by your character and other players/npcs.

The argument about just highlighting them with your crosshairs or name plates promoting silly names is a joke. One, you can already see other players names if you highlight them or if they speak in zone chat so that argument doesn't have any merit and two, the highlighting of a player is next to impossible in a group setting, so again doesn't hold any weight.

    There's a dilemma?

Nameplates were in the game and working just fine but ZOS disabled them during closed beta. Considering that the majority of players want them, the dilemma for ZOS is how to satisfy all of their playerbase. Opening up the API easily fixes the problem.
