"Gone Fishing?" - What's the point?

jacoby.swift1b16_ESO
Please do something with fishing.

Make fishing part of a trade skill.
At the very least, make it financially rewarding.
But preferably... give fishing an experienced based skill-line with a ranked set of displayable titles. (Along with inclusion in crafting.)

I pride myself at finding and excelling at the most pointless and ridiculous skills in an MMO, but in it's current state, I don't think even I will be doing much fishing. (Well, not much anyway.)

Personally, I'd just be ok with fish being able to be used in cooking and/or alchemy. I really only fish to get rid of the worms/crawlers I unearth when I collect herbs/clothing mats (because who doesn't hate being left with a node with "worms" only?) I'll take the 3 gold over 0 gold, but yeah, it's a useless past time.

Needs to be linked to something to make it more worthwhile. Maybe the odd key to a chest somewhere. Fish to make blue or purple food or pots.

    I agree that 3g > 0g, but invariably 1 bag space > 3g.

I completely agree with the bag space, I was just saying that's the only time I fish (which is rarely) and only when I have excess space and am near a vendor.

I havent even heard if they fixed the fishing bugs. Rare fish disappear, no achievements, used bait is labeled as bait, but I can't use it. I've just been stocking up on bait, until i hear otherwise

I just dump "Used Bait". I don't mind the fishing but questing earns more gold and does it in interesting ways. ATM I keep crawlers and destroy all other bait.

You only get used bait if you're using the wrong kind of bait for the location. It's the bait that you put on your line, except it was the wrong bait for the fish, and now it's useless. The fact that you can't use it isn't a bug.

    Use bait as follows:
    stagnant pools/sewers: crawlers/roe
    salt water: worms/chub
    rivers: insect parts/shad
    lakes: guts/minnows

I actually enjoy it, just for the sake of having something else to do once in a while.

The "excitement" is actually to reel in one of the Greens or that bloody Blue one to unlock the rare fish in your achievements. I've even been fishing in places that don't give any achievement unlock, just for the sake of reeling in those rare fish.

It's also a very fun way, for me at least, to discover the zones and wander around in Tamriel.

I hope they elaborate about this kind of theme, mini game feature that's a bit outside the main gaming feature. And let's hope for us, Tamriel Anglers, that ZOS's going to add more features to fishing.

I'd be more interested in fishing if something more was added to it. Rare fish and a meta achievement are nice and all, but I fully admit that I need smaller rewards/motivations along the way to keep me interested.

Managed to reel in 4 rare fish and a sack with a couple of crafting components, while in Alik'r tonight. :)

I quite enjoy it, even more so since I've worked out what bait to use where!

Even if I do hope fishing will be getting more quality, I also think that there can be and should be so called "not that usefull things" in this game. I always like trinkets and stuff like that you can get and always like that you can have things, which do not help you in like leveling, or with anything.
Maybe that is so because I like roleplaying sometimes.
Used to play MUDs the text based games and I do remember there were "red herrings", items not important for you but, nice to find. Maybe this fishing without a purpose is not the same thing, but it still works for me.

That said and as first said, it could have more quality in it. Maybe there will be in the future. But, fishing even now, I like it:)

    Cheers...

I think I'm going to have to come down on the side of disapproving of looting bags of vegetables, boots and old socks or whatever other random piece of flotsam or jetsam one might add to a fishing loot table.

It feels like you have to flex your suspension of disbelief unnecessarily. I don't want to imagine that just beneath the surface of every Tamriel body of water are shoals of old boots or sacks of decomposing ingredients. There are plenty of potentially useful fishy components you can deploy to make fishing directly useful, instead of fudging in dodgy bits of loot.

Please be creative, rather than polluting our lovely waterways. ;P

Well, you can already get gunny sacks that contain something useful if you open them. The few times I've fished one up I haven't exactly been blown away by the contents, but it has been a nice little bonus.

Rewards/time = enjoyment. Remember that formula; it drives everything.

For fishing to be more than a niche activity for completionists, and compulsive types you'll have to increase the reward. By reward I am not exclusively talking about gear/gold but rather a vast swath of things that reward you for your time.

    Ideas:
-Add skill/knowledge: right bait, right zone, right time of day.
-Turn smaller fish into bait for bigger fish. (I could sell rare smelt to a vendor for gold, or I could cast it and risk losing it for an epic tuna! I could break this epic tuna up into chum and try to catch a legendary sailfish!)
-Increase gold by increasing the vendor price of fish. (make it a money maker if you catch trophy fish)
-Add fishing quests to zones that reward items of equivalent fish level. (use the bagged random item thing to randomize rewards)
-Add unique/useful items to fishing (fisherman's costume, moamer motif, etc.)
-Let fishing be a shortcut to other trade skills by adding items that can be deconstructed that bonus a trade-skill. (i.e. "you've caught, old rags(rare)" deconstructed into a blue upgrading item, and roughly twice the inspiration of an intricate item.)
-Add cooking fish to provisioning; let the blue/purple fish be crafted with without additional recipes or reagents.
-Make fish an edible alternative to provisioning and alchemy. (the random element of not knowing what you are going to catch would make it a poor alternative but an hour of fishing might net me a bit of food, and some fish I can eat instead of potions.)
-Add more trade-skills that might have uses for fishing.

In theory the achievements will unlock specific dye colors when that system launches based on what they've shown us of the dye system in development.

That said I agree that stuff you catch while fishing should be at least useful in provisioning. I mean seriously, you can catch fish and you can make food, but you can't catch fish and make food from it?? C'mon.

Attention Zenimax: Stamina builds don't hold up to magicka builds, and this is causing most of your class imbalance. It makes melee weapons and bows weaker than staves and class abilities. It makes medium and heavy armor less desirable than light armor. Fix this imbalance, and you'll address most of your balance issues.

People are looking for more ways to level VR levels...and fishing seems like a great opportunity. Make it part of quests, food ingredients, something.

Those that think fishing sucks must never have found the book that tells you which bait to use where, because you never pull used bait if you follow it. Those commenting that it needs bait fish, and reward pulls and right bait right place have clearly not followed it because it already has those! Frankly, L2F before you complain.

The achievements for listing and catching rares seems to have been fixed in the last major update, as I am one away from completing my current zones list, only before that fix in the prior zones catching rares and getting them listed rarely happened. The only bug that remains is not keeping the 100g blue rares to sell (remove the price if that is intended), but green rares are not worth money and just go on the achievement list (which I prefer so they do not clutter inventory). I have pulled purple and gold crafting mats out of the wet gunny sack which have very high market value.

    To repeat the above list

    stagnant pools/sewers: crawlers/roe
    salt water: worms/chub
    rivers: insect parts/shad
    lakes: guts/minnows

The 2nd item is bait fish caught while fishing elsewhere, and is what gets you more reward with rares, bait fish and gunny sacks. The 1st item guarantees no used bait, at least turns your 0g bait into a 3g common fish. Fishing with someone else increases rares, but the hole does not last as long. If you are unsure what the waterway is, if you are pulling used bait you are using the wrong bait, and if you do manage to catch a fish it tells you what the waterway is (pools/sewers are actually called foul water in game). I fished so much in Shadowfen that I need to do more dungeons to look for more crawlers and have been known to try ganking other players pets for their guts. Many of the mob spawns are next to fishing holes, so you have to watch your back.

Fishing is about drinking beers and mindlessly relaxing between quests and dungeons, there is no need to turn it into a complex activity, it fulfills the slot of a simple activity for the down times. That is way you do not want to add time of day for best catch, because then it cannot fill the down time slot. It ruins fishing if you stumble on a hole and it is not rewarding because it is the wrong time.

The rare list is enough to make it so you want to keep trying whenever you spot a hole, and the gunny sack certainly has high reward. So please try following the book before you complain, because fishing does suck if you are just randomly plinking random bait. But making it more than using the right bait in the right place will ruin the simplicity of fishing that makes it enjoyable and relaxing, not everything in the game needs designed for the type A grinder or gold farmer fisher.

The only thing I would add is a megaserver fishing leaderboard, adding weight/length to catches so that even the common fish have potential for reward, because fishing has always been about who caught the big one.

Just being able to cook the fish would be great.
For now it's just completely and utterly pointless but I don't want to just 'give' the bait away when I can get those 3g from them lol.
Is there a food that increase a stat like health and also increase the regeneration of it? Maybe that could set it apart.

FIrst of all, you can get more than 3g for some baits, worms in particular. It's pretty easy to get at least 10g each for them, sometimes more. As far as fishing being pointless, it depends on whether you're the type to chase achievements. There are a number of achievements and dyes to be had from fishing.
